Chichen Itza

The Sacred Well

Image description

Between El Castillo, the great pyramid, and el Cenote Sagrado, the Sacred Well is long, white limestone road, called a sacbe.

The Maya built these white, limestone roads all over Chichen Itza, and all over Yucatan. The sacbe to the Sacred Well is more than five meters wide, as if designed for great processions. Parts of it are still paved with ancient concrete.

Today, vendors stretch along its length, selling handicrafts and knick knacks to the 2 million tourists who visit Chichen Itza each year.
