Base of the north staircase

Image description

This is the northern staircase showing the huge twin figures of the head of the feathered serpent god Kukulkan at the base of each balustrade.

This is the the only staircase of the four to have carved feathered serpents at the base. It faces the Sacred Cenote, and at the top of these stairs is the portico to the primary inner temple. The head seen on the right is illuminated by the sun during the famouss shadow-and-light effect that occurs during every equinox.
